India is accelerating its clean energy transition with an ambitious goal of achieving 500 gigawatts (GW) of installed power capacity by 2030, Union Minister Pralhad Joshi announced at the ‘Resilient Futures Summit 2026’ in New Delhi.
Highlighting the country’s progress, Joshi stated that under the leadership of Narendra Modi, India has already met its target of sourcing 50 percent of its electricity from non-fossil fuel sources—five years ahead of schedule. This achievement reflects the government’s ability to not only meet but surpass key climate and energy commitments.
At present, nearly 30 percent of India’s electricity is generated from renewable sources, including solar, wind, battery storage, and pumped storage systems. Joshi noted that during peak demand periods, almost two-thirds of the country’s electricity needs were recently met through renewable energy. This milestone signals both a significant rise in generation capacity and improved efficiency in transmission infrastructure.
Describing India’s progress as a major success story, Joshi emphasized that the country is aggressively expanding its energy capacity and remains on track to achieve critical milestones by 2027. While a substantial portion of the required capacity has already been installed, he acknowledged that considerable work still lies ahead. The government plans to address this through a utility-led model aimed at accelerating project execution and grid integration.
Joshi also highlighted India’s remarkable strides in solar and green energy development, noting that several large-scale projects are currently underway and will continue to drive growth in the sector.
Earlier this month, the minister announced that India recorded its highest-ever annual increase in wind energy capacity, adding a historic 6.1 GW during 2025–26. The country now ranks fourth globally in wind energy, with over 56.1 GW of installed capacity and an additional 28 GW currently under implementation.
